What is Risperdal? Facts and Resources about Risperdal

Free Case Review

Risperdal is an atypical antipsychotic medication designed by Janssen Pharmaceutica to combat many of the devastating conditions associated with the delusional psychosis commonly caused by the mental disorder schizophrenia. Researchers and scientists also discovered that the drug could potentially treat related conditions such as autism and bipolar disorder despite the fact that it had not been adequately tested on those conditions.

Like other drugs, Risperdal has side effects. The most common side effects of Risperdal use include nausea, substantial weight gain of up to 50 pounds, insomnia and low blood pressure. The antipsychotic drugs have been known to cause serious damage if used over a long period of time, namely in the forms of tardive dyskenesia, extrapyramidal disorders, and neuroleptic malignant syndrome. These diseases are characterized by uncontrollable and purposeless spasms and potentially fatal muscle rigidity.

Risperdal became the most commonly prescribed antipsychotic medication in the United States despite these potentially dangerous side effects. Unfortunately there were reports of Risperdal and similar drugs causing strokes or stroke-like events when doctors used the medication to treat victims of senile dementia. Although not intended to treat senile dementia, doctors used Risperdal in this unintended but fully sanctioned practice.

There is never any reason that a medication should cause more harm than good. If you are a victim of Risperdal-related side effects you may have a right to take action against the company who failed to adequately warn you of dangerous consequences from medication usage. You must not hesitate, for the law limits the amount of time you have to pursue your case. Let one of our dedicated and experienced Risperdal attorneys help you in your time of crisis.
